Three Ways to Develop Critical Thinking Skills

  1. Building Vocabulary:

When kids learn and use more words, they can talk better and understand others better too. Having a bigger vocabulary helps them be more clear in what they say, which can help them express their thoughts and ideas better. However, children (and adults too!) must encounter a new word 4 to 12 times before it is added to their vocabulary. That’s why Reading Quests has created various activity sheets to help kids with repetition, recall, and memorization.

Our family’s favorite word from Holes was “perserverance”. I personally love the word as it’s another way to say “grit” which is essential for kids because it helps them develop resilience and endurance in the face of challenges and setbacks. Gritty kids don't give up easily when faced with obstacles, failures, or difficulties. They remain committed to their goals and are willing to work hard and persist through adversity to achieve them.

What did your family pick as their new favorite word from Holes?

2. Story Comprehension:

It's important for kids to work on reading comprehension after reading a book because it helps them to understand and interpret what is being read. When kids are able to understand and enjoy what they read, it can foster a lifelong habit of reading for pleasure, which has many benefits for academic success and personal growth. That’s why Reading Quests provides reading comprehension printables for each book in our library including Holes.

3. Creative Reading Response:

Incorporating creative reading response activities into reading time can help to make reading more engaging, enjoyable, and meaningful for children. By providing opportunities for self-expression, creativity, and reflection, these activities can help children to develop a love of reading that can last a lifetime.

The possibilities are endless, and the key is to choose activities that are engaging, fun, and appropriate for the child's age and interests. At Reading Quests, we’ve created a few activities to get you started!
